Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oil

Adding oil to engine

Here at the McCall Motors service center, we are proud to provide car owners from Altoona to Duncansville a wide range of automotive services & maintenance answers. You may be asking, “Does it really matter whether I use synthetic vs. conventional oil?” Simply put, yes! Read on to find out the chemical and performance differences, then contact us with any remaining questions.

What is Regular Oil?

Regular oil (also called conventional oil) is blended with chemical additives and provides lubrication to internal parts, which ultimately reduces engine wear. It also serves to protect your car’s engine from high temperatures.

Synthetic vs. Regular Oil: Is Synthetic Oil is Superior?

Synthetic oil is petroleum prepared by laboratory scientists, engineers, and chemists. Synthetic oils oxidize less easily than conventional oils and are also better at retaining lubrication. They’re chemically developed from petrochemicals in intense processes to provide pinpointed properties that make them superior (and also more expensive) than conventional oils. Synthetic oils also:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Deliver enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Offer enhanced protection for critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends

The third choice besides synthetic oils and conventional oils (often called mineral oils) are synthetic blends. These use a mixture of synthetic oil and conventional oil, which helps to reduce the cost vs. choosing full synthetic, but also provides enhanced properties vs. standard conventional oil.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: Which Should I Use?

There are certain vehicles that require full synthetic oil, and that could just include your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram vehicle! For more information on what your vehicle needs, you can consult your owner’s manual or reach out to the service department at McCall Motors!
